Reproduction and Insights On Baby Lab Blog #2 (Semester 2)

         Reproduction is the biological process by which new offspring or organisms are produced  through their parents. There are two types of reproduction which are asexual and sexual. Asexual reproduction can reproduce by itself and does not need another however a sexual needs both individuals or known as gametes. Meiosis is a way to create gametes which allows offspring are created. Life without reproduction would result in un-natural ways since life would not go on well with new people and life to support. Without reproduction, life would not sustain since no evolution and new life would take place. Sexual reproduction is kind of like a lottery since, for example, in meiosis there are different sets of chromosomes that the offspring would get in order to produce them just like a lottery draw where the possibilities are kind of endless.

      In the baby lab, I realized that the offspring's genotype and phenotype depends on the parent's genotype and phenotype. Also that sometimes a trait could be prominent in the child but not in both the parents meaning that they have received from the grandparents since traits could be recessive in the parents but passed down to be dominant in the child. The baby lab showed me that traits could be passed down from any other descendant due to the fact that they could be dominant or recessive. 

Career- Genetic Counselor Blog #1 (Semester 2)

          The genetic counseling process helps people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. They provide a critical service to individuals and families considering undergoing genetic testing by helping them identify their risks for certain disorders, investigate family health history, interpret information and determine if testing is needed.In order to become a genetic counselor you would have to first earn a bachelor degree in biology or health-care related field to enroll in a master's degree program. Course work that focuses on genetics,biochemistry, and statistics are needed in order to become a good counselor. You would also need a master's degree for positions and when you have achieved it then you would have to become certified and licensed in order to treat other patients. Usually a lot of work experience and volunteer work with helping elders or others are some training that is involved in order to understand and work well with the patients that would approach you. The average salary is estimated as $49,195 – 64,208 annually since they could also earn additional money.

Being able to Regenerate Parts, Beneficial?

It would be beneficial to be able to regenerate parts like planaria worms because then there would be no need to suffer and be in pain in order for something to heal. Also being able to regenerate can help the death rate decrease and allow us to live longer than the regular life span. However, being able to regenerate parts means that it would also take a long time and could be painful to look at or bear making the idea of being able to regenerate parts not beneficial. Even though the whole population may benefit from the ability to regenerate parts of the body it may have bad effects too.

Pandemic 2 Blog

I wasn't successful in creating a pandemic since there were survivors in Peru, Argentina and Madagascar because the diseases did not spread fast enough into the country and before the disease could infect anyone they closed off the transits, airports and ship routes too early. My methods of transmission was by rodents, insects, waterborne and airborne. The initial symptoms were fever and sweating. My pathogen being a bacteria evolved by spreading to different regions and increasing the symptoms such as nausea, blinding, heart and liver failure and many more without actually having a working vaccine/cure to it. The difference between a bacteria and virus pathogen is that a bacteria is able to spread faster than a virus and the cure to a virus is more easier to be found than to a bacteria since viruses are something that can easily grow and be figured out.

Isolating the source place from other places and providing nearby places with masks and support is the best strategy that saves the most people while sacrificing a few. Since the disease will not be able to spread anywhere besides within the same place providing vaccine to only one place would be less expensive and life threatening.

Fermentation as a Cooking Method #5

   With the use of fermentation a lot of cooking uses of having the right amount of nutrients and bacteria can be determined since fermentation allows the good bacteria to come in and provide helpful nutrients for the body. Since fermentation involves the uses of bacteria it allows foods that are fermented to gain enough probiotics that could help our body which are essential to a proper digestive system which then aid in the digestion and absorption of food, maintain and repair the cells of the intestines, and improve the movement of the bowels. The fermentation of food and used in cooking dishes provide more beneficial bacteria that could actually improve ones's body functions and the nutrients taken in.

        From my food analysis data I learned that I do not take in a lot of fiber throughout the five days which in turn will make it harder for me to take out the wastes in my body. Also that I consumed very little water making me vulnerable to diseases since water regulate body temperature and facilitates normal functions of the body process. Also since I do not consume a lot of protein then my body will not function well creating a delayed wound healing. plucking out of hair, hair loss, skin pigmentation and the development of dermatitis. So having protein is vital for the human body. I learned that I need to consume more protein, fiber and water. Also a bunch of other nutrients however these are more important.

Synopsis on Hot Zone:

       In Hot Zone it explains the concepts of the Ebola virus, How it came to be and what it does to the body of animals and humans once inside their blood. The Ebola virus originated from the monkeys that came from Uganda which were then imported to Europe and then to Germany spreading the virus around and killing many. The medical army scientists took up the task on how the virus spread from one to another through monkeys. These scientists routinely took notes on the monkeys status in the different zones and dissected the monkeys that died because of the virus to find out what the Ebola virus did to the monkey's body since they are similar to humans and tried to find out the cause of the virus.
      One of the army scientist was Nancy Jaax who was a woman that everyone believed that she should be involved in their medical research on the Ebola virus. She was a strong-willed woman who did her best to prove that she was a good researcher. She could use her feet to do almost anything since she was trained in martial arts. She was a strong, determined, committed and confident woman who believed in herself and these characteristics make her a strong person. However even though she had many strong points for a army researcher she also had some bad characteristics. She had hand motions were "too quick" to handle delicate work in the dangerous situations thus making it dangerous to work with the Ebola virus. Her hands looked clumsy and nervous thus showing the bad characteristics of her working as a researcher. Also when in certain situations she tend to be reckless and thoughtless such as when she was opening the can with a butcher knife thus making it inadequate to work as a army medical researcher.
       In order to go into the different levels of Ebola containment you need to go through certain precautions. In order to go from level 0 to 2 they had to put on a sterile surgical scrub suit with a cap, so the hair is even tucked in, first with all their clothes and even their underwear. When they entered the Level 2 zone with bare feet they had to put on white socks and then go into Level 3. When in Level 3 they put on baby powder on their hands and the latex rubber surgical gloves. After they had to tape up their gloves to thee sleeves of the scrub suit and their socks to the trousers to seal up the open spaces so nothing can go in. Before entering the Level 4 they had to put on a Chemturion biological space suit which was a heavy-duty pressurized plastic suit that met government requirements for work with airborne agents. The suit had brown- rubber gloves that were attached by gaskets at the cuffs since the hands were most vulnerable part of the suit because of what hey handled. They also had to wear a helmet that provided uncontaminated air when the Level 4 zone. After all these precaution then only can one enter the Level 4 zone.
      Since Nancy Jaax was in a hurry she did not inspect her suit carefully. During the dissection she found that there was a cut on the suit on the wrist of her right hand where she had cut herself with the knife. She quickly fled and took off everything and went into the decontamination shower. She was worried about her children and her life itself. When she came out she quickly found that her last glove was still intact and the cut on her hand did not have contact with any of the infected Ebola blood. She survived and it was considered a miracle since she was very lucky, it was a miracle. She was the first to not have had contact with the virus even though her glove was cut and the infected blood went through. Soon after the incident the researchers found that the Ebola virus traveled through the air.
